2010 Association State Champs
‘YVMDFNL Open Association Netball Team are 2010 STATE CHAMPIONS’ YVMDFNL Netball Team takes out NETBALL VIC State Association Championships. Up against the best metropolitan & country netball associations in Victoria, the YVMDFNL Association Team stood tall in an awesome performance at the State Netball Hockey Centre last Sunday. There were two open sections; and only the top 2 teams of each section went through to finals. The day did not go to plan initially with a first round loss to Ovens and Murray. The pressure was then on as one more loss would have meant we were going home early and would miss any chance of playing finals. The team lifted with commitment as they stuck to their game plans and won their remaining 5 matches. YVMNDFNL coach Kate Upton said “the initial early morning loss stung us into action; we just got better with every game we played and we were devastating at finals time”. In the semi finals, YVMDFNL played Goulburn Valley who finished top in section 1. Goulburn was undefeated and we had to make sure we controlled every pass, and made the right choices. The girls started strongly, some player changes at half time, further enhanced our dominance with a final score of 18-8. Our next challenge, the Grand Final was a chance for the team to redeem themselves from Round 1, as we were once again playing Ovens and Murray. They were a very physically strong team, and moved the ball quickly. We had to slow their flowing game and get hands over every ball, but more importantly we had to play a very controlled game of netball, to be any chance of winning. The grand final was of a very high standard, and at half time Oven & Murray held a one goal lead. Kate Upton requested a supreme second half effort and asked the girls to give everything they had left physically, and make sure they were always in the front position before receiving a pass. Kate said “play it safe don’t choose the big risk passes, work as one to get it into the goalers”. This was clearly a sound strategy as if the YVMDFNL could force one or two turnovers that might be just enough to win the game. The team delivered error free netball for the next half, they got the two turnovers they needed and came away with an amazing one goal win. YVMDFNL CEO Stephen Walter said ...”this is a huge achievement for our netball league that is only a few years old. We have some great plans for netball in the Yarra Valley & Mountain District area and this sends out a very clear message that we are serious about taking netball to the next level…..Kate Upton has been an extraordinary coach and the commitment & efforts of all the players and support staff has been magnificent…..it is an awesome achievement”.
